As you enjoy your warm home, be sure you take the time to proof your home against unwanted guests — rodents. As temperatures drop, rodents go in search of warm cozy spaces, and homes create perfect nesting opportunities. Rodents alone invade an estimated 21 million homes in the U.S. each winter. Here are just a few ideas to help keep the rodents out.
- Clear the Clutter: Rodents love the hiding spots that an extensive amount of clutter provides, especially in undisturbed areas like attics, basements, and garages. To make these spaces less inviting to rodents, throw away excess junk like old newspapers and keep your boxes organized off the floor.
- Seal the Cracks: Rats and mice can squeeze through tiny spaces. Seal off as many cracks, gaps, and holes as you can find in your walls and around windows. Close off any opening larger than a ¼ inch with caulk and/or copper wire mesh. Check window screens for tears and cap off your chimney.
- Trim the Shrubs: Plants around the home will be a rodent’s first pitstop before finding their way into your home. By keeping plants 2 to 3 feet away from the building, it creates a more sterile environment that is less friendly to rodents. Trim tree branches that hang near your home as well. Rodents are excellent climbers.
This is an excellent start to ward off uninvited guests. If Rodents still manage to find their way in and you suspect an infestation, call in the professionals. We’ll make sure your home is free of any pests.
